Skip Beat! (Manga) Review Part 1

It’s nearly the end of August now. And yes, I know, I haven’t reviewed “Skip Beat!” yet, like I said I would. So, here it is.
Actually, I don’t really stick with Shojo manga, normally. I read some, and stopped reading them halfway, like Ouran High School Host Club, or Ichigo100%. Probably because I was more into Shonen type. But I still want to try more Shojo-type manga, see if there’s any that could really hook me up.
Skip Beat!, is a Shojo-type manga by Yoshiki Nakamura (both story & art), which I just started reading lately. Differ from a few other shojo’s that I’ve read, this one hooked me pretty fast starting from the very first chapter.
The lead character, Kyoko Mogami, was a sixteen year old girl who, as early as sixteen years of age, had left school for the big city of Tokyo, and worked many part-time jobs to “take care” of her childhood friend, who was also her secret crush, Sho Fuwa.
As decent as it sounds, she had been living with this childhood friend Sho Fuwa’s rich family since she was a child (because of a matter yet to be discovered the more I proceed with this manga). Sho Fuwa, who was the one who was expected by his family to take care of the inn the family owned, decided to leave for Tokyo to pursue his dream in entertainment industry instead of taking over the family’s inn. And he asked Kyoko Mogami to go with him.
Innocent and naive as she always was, Kyoko agreed and dropped school for Tokyo with Sho, though she was actually doing pretty good in school. In her young and naive mind, as long as Sho was happy, and as long as Sho could pursue his dream, everything else about herself came second. And with that, she could be happy. Yeah. Until…
Until she overheard a conversation between Sho and his manager.
Ever since Sho had becoming famous as a singer, he had seldomly come home. And everytime he came home, he was in a bad mood. Actually, he had always treated Kyoko like a “maid” since they were children, I think. Kyoko just didn’t really realize that because the number one person in her life and mind was Sho (remember, she was kind of abandoned by her own family).
And of course, the conversation that Kyoko overheard proved it all. Sho was just using her, and that was all there was to it. And from then, Kyoko vowed to take revenge of her life that had been ruined by Sho. So the following chapters and plots are focusing on how Kyoko tried her way in taking revenge over Sho.
This manga would give you some pretty good laughs. I love how the mangaka narrated the story. And Kyoko’s inner evils and angels’ role in the story everytime her mood changes. It gave me a pretty good laugh. Sometimes the spontaneous surroundings of Kyoko’s could also make you laugh. And her characters. I guess Kyoko was the reason I got hooked up to this manga pretty quickly.
I don’t guarantee the same vibes would be experienced by you, but for the least, you get what’s the story is about.
Until next time, see ya!
